BEACON has released a new report on beach access, using mobile device location-derived data to research beach use, and beach users’ activities, and inform beach management. BEACON has coordinated a group of managers, academic scientists, and technical experts to examine using this novel source of data. BEACON staff, and the staff of BEACON’s partner organizations, Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA),
California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), have prepared this report jointly for BEACON and for BEACON’s partners.

The technical paper reports on the results of an initial Mobile Device Location Data Pilot Project, detailing data sources, data availability, data privacy, data type and forms, data acquisition, storage, processing, various methods of analysis, and data limitations. The report provides suggestions regarding continuing research and data collection activities that combine this novel type of data with traditional types of beach use data into
a larger regional beach use data monitoring system.
