BEACON has released a report prepared by Integral Consulting with support from Beacon analyzing opportunities for better coordinated governance of regional sediment management and Sea Level Rise Adaptation.
According to the report, “Sediment is one of California’s most overlooked and underutilized adaptation resources.” Sediment can play a critical role in enhancing the physical and ecological resilience of coastal systems. Currently, however, regional sediment management and broader climate and sea level rise adaptation planning remain siloed.
The report covers several key findings, including the regional sediment and adaptation planning, governance and permitting barriers, sediment variability, logistical barriers, funding challenges, governance and jurisdictional challenges, and needs for expanded outreach and education regarding sediment’s role in resilience.
The report provides several recommendations, including:
Updating and Aligning RSMPs with Adaptation Plans; Enhancing Interregional Governance and Collaboration; Streamlining Permitting and Regulatory Integration; Integrating Sediment into Climate Resilience Frameworks; Quantifying Multi-Benefit Outcomes; Supporting Pilot Projects and Adaptive Implementation; and Improving Outreach and Equity Outcomes.
BEACON would like to get comments on the report from a broad range of interested parties. The report can be viewed at this link and any comments should be provided to: BEACON SAC Coordinator and Science Specialist, Jenna Wisniewski, at wisniewski@beacon.ca.gov by July 18th.
